Gerber 22-01545 Black Diesel Multi-Plier with Sheath

I’ve been using Gerber Multitools for a few years now and I love how handy and functional they are. Although not as tough or as high quality steel as Victorinox, in my experience Gerber model is more handy. You can quickly reach for its pliers to tighten a bolt or a screw,
Although I haven’t been using this black Multiplier as much as other tools, it certainly looks cool, it has some neat features which makes it exactly what I need.
I carry this with me everywhere. who needs a tool box when you have this beast ?
This tool is great- but the black coating is not. My hands are completely covered in a black, oily substance that is coming off of the tool immediately upon taking it out of the box. It’s too bad, because it looks nice, but clearly is not made to withstand even minor use.
I like it overall, the blade is great and all the tools in the handle come out smoothly. What I didn’t care for though was the pliers don’t come out so well. They don’t snap out with the flick of the wrist like the other one I had. I think it’s due to the black powder coating. Also I’ve had it only a few days and the black is already coming off. I have a feeling it’ll be half silver in a few weeks. Functionality is great, but I’d go with the silver one.
I actually returned the Gerber Diesel in black. I bought it, and when I got it, I immediately opened it up, and flicked my wrist, and the darn thing got stuck half way.
I am not sure if it was the black powder coating or what, but I have had another gerber for about 10 years now, and it flicks open just fine, but I got this one to open about 1 in every 5 tries.
Then I tried to check out all the cool tools. The problem was, they were stuck inside. After struggling for what seemed like an eternity, I almost pulled our another pair of pliers just so I could get the knife and file out. Then I realized, hey, I shouldn’t need another tool, to make my multi tool function.
So I decided I was gonna send it back. As I went to put it back in the box, I looked down at my hand, and it was COVERED in the black powder coating. It took a few washes with soap and water to get it off.
Like I said, I have never been disappointed with Gerber before, and I returned it and got the Pro Scout, which is fantastic. Maybe the black powder coating was never sealed on properly, and I imagine that is why all the tools got stuck, so I would steer clear of the fancy cool black one, and get the plain old stainless steel.
That’s my two cents.
