Gerber 22-41795 Profile Fixed Blade Knife, Drop Point

Great knife for the bush! First, I honed it to the edge I prefer as I’ve never been a fan of factory edges. Then I took it out and batoned some firewood for kindling, shaved some cedar bark for tinder, carved a couple of tent pegs, and then brought it inside for some tomato slicing (the ultimate test of blade sharpness)! The edge held well after all of the abuse and sliced cleanly through a couple of tomatoes with very little crushing. Not bad. I’ll be teaching a Wilderness Survival course next month for two days where I’m going to beat the snot out of this knife, but so far, I’m impressed. Excellent knife for the money. I’ve ordered two more: one for the wife and for my soon-to-be 1st Class Scout. Buy one! Only one downside: the sheath sucks. I’m going to be pricing a custom horizontal carry leather from JRE Industries (online) to get a sheath worthy of this knife. The quality of the knife deserves a better sheath. I rate the knife at five stars, the sheath at a 1.7.
I am pleased with the purchase. This was a nice knife for the price. What attracted me was the blade shape. Due to its configuration, my thumb fits nicely in the raised portion of the blade. I experienced less strain on the thumb joint and allowed for greater blade control. The sheath is made of ballistic nylon which I do not care for. The snap on the handle loop was broken when I received it. For some this may be an issue, but, I spent my money for the knife, not the sheath. The textured rubber handles are a real plus for a sure grip. The blade is, of course, sharp right out of the box. Despite the sheath, I would recommend this knife to others.
When I first saw this knife I really liked the profile and blade geometry of the knife. After reading several reviews I decided to spend the $20 on what would hopefully turn out to be a “good” small camping and batoning knife. After buying the knife I now have mixed feelings about it. The handle shape does not fit my large hands very well, and the knife was extremely dull out of the package. I own over 200 knifes, several of them Gerber, but this if by far the dullest knife I have ever bought. I may just take it to a grinder and modify it to fit my hands. If I could just remove part of the arc on the butt of the knife so that my pinkie finger would fit, and sharpen the blade it may become suitable for my needs. Unlike the other reviewers here, my sheath actually fits well, and does not let the knife slide at all. The sheath is suitable for a $20 knife. Overall the materials the knife itself is made of seem very good, and I like the idea of being able to remove the scales. The packaging says “surgical steel”, but who knows what the ratio of nickel/chrome/molybdenum is. The titanium nitride coating seems fine, but I will see how long it lasts once I start batoning kindling. For a person with smaller hands, this knife could have many uses. For my large hands it just does not fit well.
I pretty much agree with everyone who said this is a realy good knife (and it is too very sharp you unpleasable people), but i have some problems nobody talked about. they were very small, and would take five minutes if you had access to any form of sharpening tools.they are:
A) Rather ugly bend in the edge two thirds of the blade’s length from the point,
and………
B) The last milimeter or two from the very point is unsharpened, as though they just forgot about it.
this, however, does not change opinion of gerber in the big picture; this just makes me take one star off my review of thier product. sorry. but seriously, i do agree this is still a realy (is that how it’s spelled?) good knife, and what makes it all the better is it’s cheap.
I got this knife simply because of the price and I like the way it looks. I read the reviews here before i decided to buy it. I eventually decided to spend the 20 for it thinking what can I lose? well I got the knife and I love it. I dont know what people here are talking about when they mention the sheath(not sure on the spelling). Its just fine for me, the whole blade fits in perfectly and the little button strap to hold it in place is just perfect as well. its easy to clip and even easier to unclip. If you have HUGE HANDS then I’d go look for another knife. Because that is true the handle may be a little to small for big hangs. My hands are about medium and I’m ok with it. The blade is a little dull but thats an easy fix.
