Smith and Wesson SW1062 Screw Extractor Set, 5-Piece

Since I’m a thrifty (cheap) individual I bought these extractors mainly because of the price. I had assembled an Adirondack chair, made a boo-boo and had to disassemble to correct the error. Four phillips screws were counter-sunk plus the slots were ruined. The first screw was difficult because I used the wrong size extractor. After figuring out the right size to use, the remaining three came out quite easily using a small adjustable wrench.
I bought these screw extractors with the intention of removing small hinge screws that were covered with layers of paint. The philip head slots were completely covered and inaccessable. Out of 16 screws, I was able to remove only1 with this tool….the first one I tried. Naturally, my initial excitement and satisfaction turned to dismay and frustration. The “extractor” simply does not grip the screw head as intended. It would have been more effective using a rotary tool with a cutting wheel to make a new slot on the screw head.
Cheap, does it’s job reasonably well, has bright brand name, but still, Made in China. Don’t expect it to last as long as your grandpa’s smith & wesson
These do break. They are the same as EZ Out and some of the other systems. When in doubt, stop. I broke one in a car manifold. The metal is so hard I could not drill into it and I tried all the drill bits. I eventually went down the side and was able to drill a new hole and thread a new bolt. It didn’t look pretty but it worked. So, be careful.
Guess I was a little too strong or something,it broke while trying to extract a broken screw.
