  1. This is an excellent camping/hiking knife, which is exactly what I was looking for. The knife seems light for its size, yet is very sturdy and well made. The blade is VERY thick, noticeably thicker than the Benchmade fixed blade knives, but it is expertly carved and shaped to not feel thick. This makes for an incredibly sturdy knife that is still able to be used precisely, and doesnt feel like a hammer like other thick bladed knives. While I wouldn’t recommend it for safety reasons, this knife could easily be used as a prybar if needed. The tang of the blade goes the full length of the handle, unlike cheaper copies.

After some use in the field I can say that the blade is strong and keeps an edge well. I have not tried anything silly like chopping down a tree, but it has cut plenty of rope and cord, trimmed dozens of sticks into marshmallow holders for the kids, and numerous other campsite duties without the need for sharpening as of yet. When it does require sharpening, I plan on sending it back to SOG for their $9 sharpening service to bring the edge back to factory new condition.

The blade is just long enough to be useful, but not so long as to make you look like a psychopath for wearing it on the trail. The handle is comfortable and sturdy. The back of the blade is knurled, not enough to be counted as a file or saw, but just enough to offer grip if needed for delicate work. In an emergency, I suppose the back of the knife could be used to saw soft woods or make a slot in a soft material. The area where the back of the blade meets the handle is smooth, just right if you put your thumb there for control, but also works well to stike the flint if you are like me and use a magnesium/flint fire starter while camping.

While comparing to my beloved fixed blade Benchmade knives, I am obligated to say that this is a better knife for REAL outdoor use. It may not be as pretty or sexy as some of the Benchmades, bit it is more functional. My Benchmades are gorgeous, and feel fantastic in the hand, but this knife is study, well designed, and perfectly featured for field use.

While I love the feel of the full size version of this knife (the SEAL issue knife), for anyone who isn’t taking it into combat or disarming bombs with it, this is a much better knife.

  2. I must say that I am impressed with the knife itself. Although, it seems like the opening on the kydex sheath for cutting rope is not deep enough to expose the blade. Should be an easy modification to file down yourself since it is only hard plastic.

As for the box that the knife is actually in, I thought it was much too large for what’s actually in the box. The box is almost twice the length of the sheath. Not to mention that it is not tightly packaged. The knife was in a small open bag with a piece of cardboard folded around the blade and both the knife and the sheath were just sliding around loose inside the box. This IS a survival knife and it is bound to get knocked up with use so I suppose the packaging isn’t really that crucial. Although, as a gift, a smaller, tighter box would have been a nice touch.

There was a previous review that complains that their knife did not come with a lanyard eye-hole. Not sure which version of the knife they purchased, but this one DOES come with a hole for your lanyard.

I emailed 2 representatives from SOG after noticing that some sites have this knife with AUS6 steel while others list it as AUS8 which is a slightly higher grade. The response I received from both representatives were very similar stating that their AUS8 versions are from Taiwan and their AUS6 versions from Japan. Amazon lists the steel as AUS8 so I was expecting it to be from Taiwan but the knife I received was from Seki, Japan. This makes me wonder if I received the lower grade version or if Japan is now making them with AUS8 as well. I would not base my purchase on one country or the other. Through my own research, it is to my knowledge that you can expect a fine knife from either manufacturer.

Hope this review was helpful. :)

  3. This is a wonderful all-around or hunting knife. I especially like the straight blade, as opposed to the normal serrated surface on the Seal Pup. It is much easier to sharpen with a straight edge. The sheath is heavy duty and has a thick plastic insert for the blade. I will never need to buy another knife. I do wish it had an eye for attaching a lanyard, though, so I could hook it to my belt. You really wouldn’t want to lose it!

  4. Just got this knife. It is awesome. Good size, seemed a little small at first but after using it I believe it is just about the perfect size. The knife comes with a kendex sheath with a space cut in it to cut rope without having to take the knife out of the sheath. The sheath has many options for strapping the knife to your chest, hip, or leg. The knife is sharp and stays sharp after use. It is made of better metal than the non-elite version. The knife has a nice even balance to it and great handle. It is very durable and comes with a life time warranty from SOG. You can abuse this knife and it won’t break. This is the knife you want to take with you when you need an all purpose indestructible survival knife The stealth black tini finish blade is durable and won’t rub off.

  5. SOG REAL QUALITY I MEAN IT BUILT FOR OUR MARINES AND LUCK FEW THAT CAN AFFORD IT, LIKE IT ALOT EXCELLENT CRAFTMANSHIP AND VERY NICE HARD SHELL SHEATH. NICE HANDLE, THE ONLY THING I DID NOT CARE FOR WAS THE ROW OF TEETH OR THE SAW ON TOP EDGE ALONG KNIFE . I PERFER FLAT OR SMOOTH THAT WAS ONLY MY COMPLAINT. BOTH 2 AT SAME TIME ONE WAS 10.00 CHEAPER DISCOUNT OF SOME SORT.. ? BUT AGAIN THE SAW ACROSS THE TOP OF KNIFE KINDA I DON’T CARE FOR. HOWEVER MY NEXT KNIFE SHOULD BE TANTO STYLE I WILL LOOK AT SOG AGAIN BUT KA-BAR MIGHT BE MORE IN LINE FOR ME. THANK YOU ALL MICHAEL,
